Autumn Sting Alert! Protect Your Pets from Bee Trouble This Season

Here in CT, bee stings are more common this time of year, as bees are preparing their queen for the Winter and are more vigilant near the hive, hence they are more aggressive.

Just as with humans, a simple bee sting can turn into a serious matter for your dog or cat, if he or she is sensitive or highly allergic.

Bee venom contains proteins, which can impact the Immune System, causing allergic response ranging from pain and swelling as well as anaphylaxis, a serious allergic reaction to the venom.

Anaphylactic shock can cause difficulty breathing and usually happens within a minutes after the sting. For this reason, we suggest that your dog be observed responsibly while enjoying the great outdoors, particularly in late summer and autumn. In case of a bee sting we suggest you reach out to your veterinarian immediately. * We also suggest you keep on hand Benadryl in an accessible place in your kitchen and in your glove compartment when traveling with your pet. Benadryl is an antihistamine medication and can help with the anaphylactic reaction. It should be administered immediately after the sting and followed by a visit to your animals veterinarian.

* Please reach out to your primary veterinarian to ask what the appropriate dose of Benadryl is for your animal in case of a future bee sting.
