Not all wet food eats the same.

Paté is finely ground and consistent throughout. Shreds and flakes have visible pieces of meat, usually served in sauce or gravy. Gravy-style foods have more liquid and a thinner consistency. Different textures for different cats.

But don’t be surprised if your cat drinks less once they’re eating wet food. They’re simply getting more of their daily hydration from their food.

Cats were built to get moisture from what they eat.

Cats evolved as desert animals with a naturally low thirst drive. In the wild, much of their hydration came from prey rather than a separate water source. That instinct is still very much a part of the cats sharing our homes today.

With dry food, cats may not always make up for the lack of moisture by drinking enough water on their own. That’s one reason moisture-rich food can be an important part of feline nutrition.

Wisdom Homestyle Paté provides up to 78% moisture in every serving, with vegetable broth adding hydration right into their bowl. As a result, many cats naturally drink less water when eating wet food because they’re already getting more moisture with every meal.

Keep fresh, clean water available every day. Some cats will drink more than others, and that’s okay. What matters is giving them free choice access to water while also providing moisture through their food.

Slow is good. Especially with cats.

Start by adding a small amount of Wisdom to your cat’s current food while gradually decreasing the amount of their current food over about 7 days. Some cats take longer, and stretching this to 10 days is completely fine.

Cats often need more time than dogs. And if your cat is making the bigger move from dry food to wet food, stay at each step a little longer before increasing the amount of Wisdom. Follow their pace, not the calendar.

A few things can help:

Warm it up a little.

Set the dish in a bowl of warm water for a minute or two before serving. Cats investigate food with their nose first, and a little warmth helps release the natural aromas.

Start smaller than you think.

Even a teaspoon of Wisdom mixed into their current food is enough for the first few days. Familiarity comes before the full bowl.

Try another recipe or rotate recipes.

Cats have strong protein preferences. A cat who walks away from one recipe may happily eat another, so don’t be afraid to change it up.

And remember: taking their time isn’t the same as saying no. They’re being cats. Give them the space to sniff, investigate and get comfortable with something new.

It starts with how cats are built to eat.

Cats are obligate carnivores. That’s why every Wisdom recipe begins with high-quality animal proteins including nutrient-rich organs. Organs aren’t an afterthought as they provide naturally occurring amino acids, vitamins and minerals that are important for complete, balanced feline nutrition.

Give them time. Cats are naturally cautious about anything new in their bowl. It’s instinct, not stubbornness. A slow, patient introduction can make all the difference.

Warm it slightly.

Cats eat with their noses first. Bring Wisdom to about 97–104°F by placing the dish in a bowl of warm water for a minute or two. Warming helps release the natural aromas cats instinctively respond to.

Start small.

Begin with about 10% Wisdom mixed into the food they already know and trust. Increase gradually over about 7 days, and take up to 10 if your cat needs more time. The first goal isn’t an empty bowl. It’s making the new food familiar.

Try another recipe.

Cats have preferences, too. One may walk away from Coastal Salmon and come running for Artisan Game Bird. Before giving up, try another recipe and see what gets their attention.

Rethink the bowl.

A wide, shallow dish gives sensitive whiskers more room and can make eating more comfortable. Sometimes the smallest change makes a surprising difference.

Give them a quiet place to eat.

Cats prefer to eat where they feel secure. Choose a calm spot away from the litter box, household traffic and other distractions.

And remember: they’re not being difficult. They’re being cats.

Cats are naturally cautious about something new in their bowl. Give them time to sniff, investigate and decide for themselves. Start small, go slowly and let their natural curiosity take it from there.
